CAMPING IN THE DOMICAN REPUBLIC
It’s easy to think of the basics when you want to help children in need. Get them an education and decent food. Don’t children need more than that? Aren’t they supposed to be happy? When you live in an inland city in an orphanage the idea of swimming and camping seems like an unrealistic dream. We made it realistic and sent all the boys in the orphanage camping by a river for 6 days in July. We added 75 students from the school in a very disadvantaged area we have helped for 14 years. So much fun! Swimming, eating outside with good food, volleyball, football, frisbees. Six days is enough time to really feel like you got away on vacation in the summer.
Do we also take care of the basics? Of course! Our volunteer delivers food that we pay for including chicken, salami, beef, fish and cheese. In person in August we resupplied the orphanage with everything they said they needed from shampoo to laundry detergent in 50lb bags.
